This class taught me a lot of “best practices” in coding, and hopefully I will continue most of them, but I really expect writing good test cases to stick. At first, I thought that writing 20 unit tests was excessive, but as our projects got more complicated, I realized how helpful it was in narrowing down exactly where my problems were. By the time we got to our third project I was writing several unit tests for every function in my code.

Like most people, I was pretty intimidated by the concept of cold calling at first, but it was…

What did you do this past week?

I had a midterm and an essay due on Friday, so those were my main focuses this week.

What’s in your way?

Not much, yet — I actually had a pretty relaxing weekend, which was nice, and hopefully will make me feel prepared for this upcoming week.

What will you do next week?

Next week I’m going to work on the Darwin project. I’m hoping to get a good start on it during the week and then finish it over the weekend so I’m not rushed right before the due date.

If you…

What did you do this past week?

I finished the Allocator project, volunteered at the UT vaccination clinic, and spent some time talking virtually with prospective UTCS students at goto Turing.

What’s in your way?

It’s always hard to get back into a school routine after a break. I’m glad that I got most of my midterms out of the way before spring break, and I was able to work on the project over the break while still having time to relax.

What will you do next week?

I have one more midterm this week, and an argumentation to write…

What did you do this past week?

This week I finished the Voting project with my programming partner!

What’s in your way?

I had several assignments and exams to get done this week, and it was difficult to keep track of everything while getting back into the regular school routine after the storm.

What will you do next week?

Finish up my last few assignments and midterms, and get ready to have a relaxing spring break.

If you read it, what did you think of the Open-Closed Principle?

I liked reading about how the Open-Closed Principle informs a lot of…

What did you do this past week?

This week I tried to get back into my school routine and got started on the new project.

What’s in your way?

It’s been difficult to transition back into school after the last week and a half, especially because I had a lot of exams and projects get pushed to next week. But being aware of deadlines and pacing myself helps, as well as knowing that spring break is coming up in a few weeks and will give me a chance to relax.

What will you do next week?

This week I’m going…

What did you do this past week?

I completed the Collatz project for this class and took my first exam of the semester!

What’s in your way?

I really try to separate schoolwork from relaxation — I never work while I eat, and I keep my computer at my desk, rather than the couch or bed. But this week I found myself missing the library, which is my favorite place to study because the change in scenery helps me get into the zone. …

What did you do this past week?

This week I started working on the Collatz project. A large part of that has been familiarizing myself with all of the tools we’ll be using, since I don’t have prior experience with most of them.

What’s in your way?

In every class, and especially with online coursework, the first assignment means getting used to what the professor expects from you: formatting, collaboration policy, what website to use for submissions, what time of day assignments are due (which is harder to keep track of than it sounds), and more. Getting acclimated to a…

Where did you grow up/where did you attend high school?

I grew up in Carrollton, Texas, where I attended Creekview High School.

What was your favorite extracurricular activity in high school?

Definitely mock trial. It was a great way to make friends and gain confidence, even if we spent way too much time arguing about meaningless stuff.

What are your expectations of this class?

I hope to become more comfortable using C++ this semester, since I haven’t used it in a few semesters. …
